South Africa: Demonstration reported outside Durban City Hall May 2

Thousands of striking municipal workers have gathered outside the Durban City Hall (KwaZulu-Natal province) on Thursday, May 2, to protest perceived unfair promotions. Police have been deployed to the area, obstructing routes in the city; protesting workers have also blocked roads in the Central Business District (CBD), causing significant traffic disruptions. The US Consulate General in Durban has closed early on Thursday because of the demonstration.

Lingering traffic disruptions are to be expected in Durban over the coming hours amid a heightened security presence. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible in Durban over the near term.
