Electoral court announces recount to begin nationwide on June 24; protests possible

Guatemala will hold a vote recount starting on Monday, June 24, after various fraud allegations emerged during the first round of elections, which took place on Sunday, June 16. The recount may last several days. The Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) stated it would conduct the recount for municipal and congressional elections as well, held on the same date. The presidential runoff remains scheduled for Sunday, August 11, though may eventually be rescheduled or canceled.
Protests are possible to contest the recount decision. Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of any protests. Clashes cannot be ruled out.
Context
The now contested results in June 16 elections showed former first lady Sandra Torres 25.27% of the vote, followed by conservative Alejandro Giammattei with 14.08% of the vote. Violent protests were reported in Quiché, Quetzaltenango, Escuintla, and San Marcos departments on June 16-17.
