Honduras: Health and education workers to protest in Tegucigalpa June 24-25 /update 6

Members of the Platform in Defense of Health and Education of Honduras, composed of teachers and doctors, have announced a strike in Tegucigalpa for Monday, June 24, and Tuesday, June 25. On Monday, protesters will gather at the Honduran Social Security Institute at 08:00 (local time). Demonstrators on Tuesday will gather at the university hospital at 13:00, specifically to denounce abuses of human rights.

Associated protests and closures may occur in San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Comayagua, Juticalpa, and other metropolitan cities. A heightened security presence is expected around all protest sites and clashes between demonstrators and police officers cannot be ruled out. Localized traffic and health service disruptions are also possible.

Context

Education and healthcare workers launched an indefinite strike on April 25 to denounce decrees aimed at restricting Honduran health and education sectors. Associated demonstrations were held throughout the month of May in major urban centers, including in the capital Tegucigalpa. The protests have turned violent at times, with a barricade being set on fire outside of the US Embassy on May 31.
