Military officers storm university and injure eight in response to anti-government protests June 24; further hostilities possible

Reports indicate that an estimated 40 military and 300 police officers entered the Honduras National University (UNAH) in Tegucigalpa with no authorization on Monday, June 24, injuring eight people. In the attack, the officers used modified Molotov bombs and shot live bullets. The National Institutional Security Force stated that the attack was staged due to the alleged kidnapping of a uniformed man by students.

Protests to denounce the government action are possible in the coming days. Such attacks cannot be ruled out at other universities, nor in upcoming protests.
