Russia: Unauthorized demonstration planned in Moscow June 12

Unauthorized March for Independence and Freedom planned in Moscow June 12; police may attempt to disperse gathering amid other scheduled events

Warning

Event

The so-called March for Independence and Freedom is slated to take place in Moscow on Wednesday, June 12. Participants are expected to march from Petrovskiye Vorota Square to Pushkin Square from 15:00 (local time); a rally will also be held at Pushkin Square from 17:00. Authorities declined to authorize the demonstration as it is scheduled to coincide with Russia Day celebrations and the "Times and Epochs" festival at Pushkin Square.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected along the march route. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Moscow are advised to avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of arrest, refrain from discussing political subjects in public or on social media, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate localized disruption near any protest sites.
