South Africa: Heavy rain and flooding in Western Cape province June 4-6; further likely

Heavy rain and consequent flooding in Western Cape province affect 700 homes June 4-6; further inclement weather conditions forecasted

Warning

Event

Heavy rain and consequent flooding have hit the Western Cape province, including the city of Cape town, between Tuesday, June 4, and Thursday, June 6. At least 700 homes were affected. Flooding was reported in the Khayelitsha, Strand, Gugulethu, and Crossroads areas. Further rainfall and associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, are likely in the coming days and weeks as the winter rains' season starts.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
