Violent protests erupted in Memphis (Tennessee state) on Wednesday evening (local time), June 12, as dozens clashed with police following a fatal officer-involved shooting. According to media reports, at least 24 police officers were injured after demonstrators threw projectiles and vandalized buildings in the Rangeline neighborhood. Riot police later fired tear gas to disperse the crowd at 22:00; three people were arrested. 

Further violent protests and a heightened security presence are expected in Memphis, along with transportation disruptions, over the coming hours and days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

The outcry followed the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old suspect by US Marshals at approximately 19:00 (local time) on June 12.
