Dominican Republic: Further protests possible in Santo Domingo July 17 /update 2

Event

Protests were reported in Santo Domingo on July 16, as protesters seek to oppose a measure that would change presidential term limits outlined by the constitution. Opposition gathered outside the National Congress again and roads were also blocked by dozens of motorcycles.

As of Wednesday, July 17, the government begins selecting the candidates for the presidential elections, which will take place on May 17, 2020. Protests are therefore expected to continue as the opposition waits to learn whether the incumbent, Danilo Medina, will be listed as one.

More protests are expected on Wednesday, as well as in the coming days and weeks until a decision is finalized.

A heightened security presence is possible near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.  

Context

Protesters have been opposing a proposal to remove presidential term limits since June, which is largely advocated by President Danilo Medina's supporters. President Medina is currently serving his second term in office.
