Warning

Event

Members of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) political group are gathering on Friday, July 12, in Santo Domingo to rally to oppose a proposal to change the presidential term limit. The rally will be led by the leader of the party, Luis Abinader, who called the rally for Friday because a new meeting was called on the matter. Protesters will begin the march at 09:00 (local time) on Avenida Jiménez Moya and march towards the National Congress.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are possible near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Protesters have been opposing a proposal to remove presidential term limits since June, which is largely advocated by President Danilo Medina's supporters. President Medina is currently serving his second term in office.

Advice

Individuals in Santo Domingo are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
