Guatemala: Increased activity at Santa Maria volcano in Quetzaltenango Department

Authorities issue warning on July 6 due to high number of eruptions by Santa Maria volcano in Quetzaltenango Department

Warning

Event

Increased volcanic activity at the Santa Maria Volcano (Quetzaltenango Department) caused authorities to issue a range of alerts as of Saturday, July 6, including restricting climbs to the volcano and advising neighboring communities to prepare for evacuation. Air traffic is also on alert due to the possibility of canceled flights if the situation worsens.

Context

As of June 28, the number of daily eruptions has increased from its average of 10 to 15 per day to 40 and 45 per day, producing more ash. The increased number of eruptions increases the possibilities of avalanches and pyroclastic flows for nearby communities.

Advice

Individuals present in the affected area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the volcano, monitor the situation, adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and covering clothing to protect skin from ashfall.
