Guatemala: Nationwide protests reported ahead of August 11 presidential runoff

Sporadic protests have been reported throughout Guatemala following a contentious presidential election held on June 16, with accusations of fraud and other irregularities. Protests are expected to continue over the comings weeks in the main urban centers, including the capital Guatemala City, and are scheduled with little notice, at times producing road blockades, transportation disruptions, and business closures. 

Since the first round of elections, the government has commenced a recount to confirm which candidates will head to the August 11 presidential runoff. More protests may take place as developments emerge related to the recount. A heightened security presence along with localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any demonstration sites.
