Authorities issue severe weather warnings issued as Typhoon Wipha moves through the region August 1; rains, flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions expected

The Hong Kong Observatory issued severe weather warnings on Thursday, August 1, as Typhoon Wipha moved through the region. Wipha was located approximately 440 km (273 mi) southwest of Hong Kong as of 10:00 (local time). Strong gusts exceeding 100 kph (62 mph) were recorded in Tai Mo To in the morning of August 1, as well as sustained winds in Cheung Chau, Waglan Island, and Tate's Cairn. The Level 3 Strong Wind Signal will remain in effect until 14:00. The Observatory also issued extended a thunderstorm warning until 11:30, and advised the public to stay indoors. Individuals should also avoid the shoreline and low-lying areas. Heavy rainfall exceeding 30 mm (1 in) per hour is likely in the coming hours, potentially prompting flooding in low-lying areas.
Officials at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) have warned that delays and cancellations are possible, though no schedule changes have been reported as of 10:00.
