The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.7-magnitude earthquake in southwestern Iran on Monday, July 8, at 11:51 (local time). The earthquake struck approximately 28 km (17.4 mi) southeast of the town of Masjed Soleyman in Khuzestan province, on the border with Iraq, at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). One death and several injuries have been reported. There have been reports of damage to buildings in the cities of Shadegan, Masjed Soleyman, Hamidiyeh, and Shoshtar.
Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
