Libya: Airstrike in Tripoli reportedly kills 40 people July 2

The Khalifa Haftar-led Libyan National Army (LNA) is being accused of targeting a migrant detention center in the Tajoura suburb of Tripoli on the night (local time) of Tuesday, July 2. According to official in Tripoli, at least 40 people were killed and another 80 wounded in the airstrike. LNA leaders claim that the strike hit a group of “terrorist elements” at a camp in the area. There has been no independent confirmation of the target of the airstrike. Details are still emerging.

Context

The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4 and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli en masse on April 7. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
