Libya: Drone strike kills seven LNA-aligned fighters in Tripoli July 20-21

Event

A drone strike killed seven fighters aligned with the Libyan National Army (LNA) in Tripoli overnight (local time) from Saturday, July 20, into Sunday, July 21. The strike came amid an increased number of Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes targeting LNA positions over the past few days, suggesting increased GNA capabilities from newly acquired unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). On Sunday, the LNA reportedly downed a GNA drone in Ain Zara, a suburb to the south of the capital.

Further GNA drone strikes may be met with retaliatory LNA attacks on UAVs at Mitiga International Airport (MJI), which could result in flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations).

Context

Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) was targeted by air and mortar strikes multiple times in June; however, the strikes did not damage the main runway or any civilian facilities and normal flight operations were typically restored within a few hours.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4 and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli en masse on April 7. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
