Mexico: Police protest in Mexico City July 3-4

Federal police rally against government proposal to merge forces in Mexico City July 3-4; avoid all protests

Warning

Event

Hundreds of federal police blocked roads and protested in Mexico City on Wednesday, July 3, against President Lopez Obrador's proposal of merging federal police into a new National Guard. Federal police argue that the move is illegal under the constitution and would also cut their pay.

Staff have threatened to continue protesting on Thursday, July 4, in a nationwide strike. Similar blockages are expected throughout Mexico City, including near government offices.

Localized disruptions, associated transportation disruptions, and an increased security presence are likely near all protests. Clashes cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
