Demonstrations have been reported near Plettenberg Bay (Western Cape province) on Wednesday, July 6, to denounce high unemployment and other housing issues. Local media report that protesters began periodically blocking the N2 highway on Tuesday evening (local time), July 2. Participants reportedly threw projectiles at passing motorists and set fire to tires on the road. Police have rerouted traffic via the Airport and Robberg roads.

Residual disruptions, including transportation disruptions and congestion on alternative routes, are likely over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Further protests are possible in the area over the coming days.
