South Africa: Nationwide truck driver strike July 18

Truck drivers to strike nationwide on July 18; associated demonstration planned in Pietermaritzburg (KwaZulu-Natal province)

Warning

Event

Truck drivers will be on strike nationwide on Thursday, July 18, to denounce the hiring of foreign drivers. The strike will coincide with the hearing at the Pietermaritzburg High Court (KwaZulu-Natal province) of the case between truck owners' and truck drivers' representatives, over the hiring of foreign truck drivers, which lead to numerous acts of violence towards foreign truck drivers over the past weeks. Members of various unions representing truck drivers are expected to gather in front the Court on Thursday. A heightened security presence, along with transportation disruptions, should be expected in Pietermaritzburg.

Advice

Individuals in South Africa are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and budget extra time to reach their destinations.
