Mexico: Disruptive nationwide protests expected by agricultural workers August 8-9

Agricultural workers and fishermen are slated to march in Mexico City and other parts of the country on Thursday, August 8, and Friday, August 9. Protesters look to express their frustrations with constant unmet demands from the government and protest various grievances, including the privilege large monopolies have in the sector.

The main protest, taking place in Mexico City, will be held at the National Palace, also known as the Zocalo, on both days. Camp sites are also expected near the area, causing foot and vehicular traffic disruptions. Some groups are traveling in caravans from parts of Chiapas through the cities of Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Puebla to reach Mexico City for the protests, which may result in transportation delays along the routes to Mexico City.

An estimated 250,000 people are expected to participate in the protests across Mexico. A minimum of 2000 are expected in Mexico City, though there will likely be many more.

Significant transportation disruptions are to be expected in Mexico City and an estimated 300 other locations where protests will take place. A heightened security presence should also be expected around the National Palace and surrounding areas. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
