Portugal: Truck drivers announce strike for August 12 despite ongoing negotiations

Truck drivers call for strike despite negotiations, riding fuel shortage fears; transportation disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Truck drivers' unions have called for another strike to take place on Monday, August 12, despite ongoing contractual negotiations with the government. Various businesses, including airports and waterway transport services, are implementing measures to avoid any fuel shortage impact. The administration at Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS), however, stated that challenges to operations are not predicted as of now.

Government stated it has two months-worth of fuel supply should there be any fuel shortages as a result of the strikes.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of all protests, which tend to come as blockades in metropolitan centers.

Advice

Individuals Portugal or those traveling through LIS are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized transportation and business disruptions, and a heightened security presence near all protest sites. In the event of fuel shortages, individuals are advised to fill up their vehicles whenever gasoline is available, to ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and to expect longer waiting times at gas stations.
