Sri Lanka: Government doctors confirm nationwide strike August 22 /update 1

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) confirmed on Wednesday, August 21, that doctors in the public sector will hold a countrywide partial strike on Thursday, August 22. Union leaders said that members at all state hospitals will participate in the industrial action, starting at 08:00 (local time). However, critical and emergency services, including at maternity, children’s, and cancer hospitals will not be impacted by the work stoppage. Disruptions to regular healthcare services, including longer wait times and canceled appointments, are possible during the strike.

Context

According to GMOA leaders, the government failed to address their concerns despite repeated requests to resolve issues within the healthcare sector. The union is calling for the government to address a shortage of quality medicines, failing to set a standard for medical education, delaying the transfer and appointment of doctors for the northern and eastern regions, and dropping standards for doctors transferring to rural hospitals.
