Sudan: Deadly flooding reported nationwide as of August 15

Recent torrential rains cause significant transportation disruptions throughout Sudan as of Thursday, August 15. Flooding is impacting several communities, including in the Salma and Mayo areas south of Khartoum, and parts of Kassala, El Gezira, White Nile, and Red Sea states. At least seven people were killed and another two injured by flash flooding on Tuesday, August 13, in the villages of Rifaa and Zarqa (El Gezira state). Local officials also warned that parts of the Tokar-Port Sudan road are flooded near Khor Baraka as of Thursday. Over 600 families are reportedly stranded in the Tokar Delta as emergency personnel have been unable to access the area. Soldiers have been deployed into the flooded areas throughout the country to assist the affected residents.

Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue into the week of Monday, August 19. Additional flooding and transportation disruptions are possible, particularly in already inundated areas.

Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
