Cambodia: Flash floods warning issued for the southern provinces September 27-29

Flash flood forecast to impact southern provinces September 27-29; transportation and business disruptions are anticipated

Warning

Event

On Monday, September 23, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MWRM) issued a warning for possible flash floods, from Friday, September 27, to Sunday, September 29, as a Low-Pressure System (ITCZ) is forecast to bring moderate-to-heavy rainfall to southern provinces. The flash flood forecast coincides with the Pchum Ben festival, taking place from Friday to Sunday, during which residents often travel to villages for celebrations.

Associated transportation and business disruptions are anticipated in the event of localized flooding or landslides.

Context

Floods usually affect Cambodia between August and October.

According to the National Committee for disaster Management (NCDM), floods have killed at least 16 people in September 2019.

Advice

Individuals in Cambodia are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
