Cambodia: Flooding affects 14 provinces September 18 /update 1

Significant flooding in Cambodia has affected almost 80,000 families as of Wednesday, September 18. On Wednesday, the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) confirmed that at least 11 people have been killed and almost 10,000 families have had to evacuate their homes across 14 provinces over the past ten days. The provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, and Preah Vihear are particularly affected, causing transportation disruptions. In the Kampong Leng (Kampong Chhnang) district, Road 50c has been temporarily closed due to rising waters.

According to forecasts from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM), water levels will continue to rise over the coming days, triggering additional flooding along with associated transportation and business disruptions.

Individuals in Cambodia areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
