Clashes between two communities causes disruption in the Sololá department September 18; follow local authority directives

Reports indicate that a confrontation between resident of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán and Nahualá turned violent, leaving at least four dead and over 30 injured on Wednesday, September 18. The confrontation saw a series of altercations and violence, and groups erected roadblocks along the Pan-American Highway. Following the confrontation, the Sololá department governor appealed to President Jimmy Morales to declare a state of siege.

Continued violence and associated transportation disruptions remain possible in the coming several days. Should it reoccur, a heightened security presence is to be expected.
