Guatemalan security authorities have announced on Monday, September 9, the deployment of 2000 additional security personnel to 22 municipalities in the five northeastern departments of Alta Verapaz, El Progreso, Izabal, Petén, and Zacapa. This decision follows the death of three army soldiers killed by suspected drug traffickers in Izabal's town of Semuy II a few days prior, which prompted Congress to issue a 30-day emergency decree on Saturday, September 7, imposing a curfew in the aforementioned departments.
