Eight people injured after MTR train derails September 17; significant transportation disruptions expected on September 18

Eight people were injured when an MTR train derailed on the East Rail Line in Hong Kong on Tuesday, September 17. The incident involving three carriages happened between Hung Hom and Mong Kok East stations at approximately 08:45 (local time). As of early Wednesday, September 18, the cause of the derailment was still under investigation but there was no immediate suggestion of foul play. East Rail Line services between Hung Hom and Mong Kok East stations were suspended on Tuesday in the wake of the incident and are expected to remain unavailable through Wednesday morning. The Hong Kong Federation of Railway Trade Unions has advised commuters to seek alternate transportation routes on Wednesday morning.
