Libya: Airstrikes reported near Misrata Airport (MRA) September 13
Sources report airstrikes near Misrata International Airport (MRA) September 13; further attacks possible
Event
Sources indicate that the Libyan National Army (LNA) has conducted airstrikes on military assets near Misrata International Airport (MRA) at around 04:00 (local time) on Friday, September 13. Two missiles also reportedly landed close to the Misrata Air College (MAC), 4 km (2mi) from the passenger facility. Independent sources in MRA have stated that there has been no disruption to civilian airport operations.
Further attacks targeting MRA are possible in the near term. This could result in the temporarily closure of the airport, though local sources consider this highly unlikely. Some disruptions to scheduled flights are possible.
Context
The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive into southern Tripoli on April 4. The advance halted 10km south of central Tripoli within a week and frontlines have remained largely static since. Throughout this time, LNA precision strikes have targeted military assets operating from Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport and Misrata International Airport. Disruption to civilian air operations has been minimal.
Though this morning's incident is not the first strike on MAC, it is the first since the closure of Mitiga International Airport (MJI) on September 1, over a separate series of incidents less directly related to the Tripoli conflict. MRA is currently the only international airport serving northwest Libya; it is reported to be crowded but functioning efficiently.
Advice
Individuals in Misrata and those traveling via MRA are advised to monitor the situation, confirm flight reservations, avoid areas affected by fighting, maintain safe and current evacuation plans, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
