Protesters block the entrance to the National Palace in Mexico City September 11; heightened security presence and traffic disruptions expected

A group of protesters gathered outside of the National Palace in Mexico City on the morning (local time) of Wednesday, September 11, blocking access to the building ahead of the president's scheduled press conference at 07:00. The group, which was largely comprised of merchants protesting insecurity in La Merced and the Central de Abastos markets, demanded to speak to the head of the government of Mexico City. As of 08:30, Plaza de la Constitución was closed between Corregidora and Moneda streets as a result of the demonstration.

Further traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest over the coming hours.
