Mexico: Tropical Storm Fernand makes landfall in Tamaulipas state September 4 /update 2

Event

Tropical Storm Fernand made landfall in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas on the afternoon (local time) of Wednesday, September 4. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Puerto Altamira to the mouth of the Rio Grande River. According to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC), tropical storm conditions will impact portions of the warning area through this afternoon. Fernand is forecast to dissipate over northeastern Mexico on Wednesday evening or Thursday, September 5.

As of 13:00 on Wednesday, Fernand is located at approximately 24.3°N 97.9°W (map here) and is tracking west-northwestward at 13 kph (8 mph). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph (40 mph) and is forecast to weaken as it moves farther inland. Fernand is expected to produce rainfall totals of 15-30 cm (6-12 in) in some areas through Friday, September 6, potentially leading to life-threatening flash flooding.

Associated flooding, power outages, and disruptions to transportation and business services are expected to continue in the coming hours and days.
