South Africa: Women’s rights rallies in Cape Town September 5 /update 1

Women’s rights activists protest in Cape Town September 5; disruptions likely

Warning

Event

Women's rights activists have called for a protest to take place in Cape Town on Thursday, September 5, to denounce gender-based violence. The protest is scheduled to take place in front of Parliament starting at 10:30 (local time). Although the protest is expected to be peaceful, a related protest held the day prior was forcibly dispersed by security forces as protesters attempted to storm the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), where the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa is taking place until Friday, September 6.

Another protest to denounce feminicide is planned to take place on Saturday, September 21, in front of Parliament in Cape Town.

A heightened security presence along with traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the protests.

Advice

Individuals in Cape Town are advised to anticipate traffic disruptions and avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution.
