Sri Lanka: Severe weather forecast nationwide September 24-25

Severe weather, including heavy rains and strong winds, continue to effect multiple parts of Sri Lanka as of Tuesday, September 24. Officials issued flood warnings for low-lying areas around the Nilwala, Kalu Ganga, and Gin Ganag rivers in southern Sri Lanka on Monday, September 23. Flooding in Galle and Matara districts on Monday left at least one person dead and over 150 homes damaged. On Tuesday, roads in Colombo were inundated by heavy rain, causing significant traffic disruptions. Officials have also temporarily suspended electricity to over 8000 customers in Matara and Galle as a safety precaution due to the current weather conditions.

Rainfall totals of up to 20 cm (8 in) are forecast for Western, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces on September 24, and up to 10 cm (4 in) in North-Western, Northern, Uva, and Eastern provinces. Strong winds, with gusts up to 70-80 kph (43-50 mph), are possible in southern regions, particularly along the coast. Severe weather conditions are expected to continue across the country through Wednesday, September 25. Further flooding and transportation and power disruptions are possible in the coming hours and days.
