Sudan: Further protest in Darfur September 24 /update 1

Event

Hundreds of student protesters are reportedly gathered for the fourth consecutive day in Niyala (South Darfur) as of Tuesday, September 24, to denounce bread and fuel shortages. Similar protests are likely in other urban centers in the Darfur region.

Further protests are likely in the coming days. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around any demonstration site.

Context

Related protests were held on September 21-23 in Niyala. On September 22, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd, injuring at least 20 people.

The tripling in the price of bread triggered a national protest movement in December 2018, which ended up removing former President Omar al-Bashir from office on April 11 and led to the creation of a Transitional Military Council (TMC). Civilian opposition leaders and the former-ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) created the transitional sovereign council on August 20 as part of a power-sharing deal, which put an end to months of almost daily protests. Sporadic demonstrations, however, continue to occur.
