German police increase border security following shooting in Halle October 9; heightened security presence and associated disruptions expected

German police have increased border security on Wednesday, October 9, following a shooting near a synagogue in Halle that left two people dead in the early afternoon (local time) on Wednesday. Police are reportedly conducting checks on routes to the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic, and have increased security controls at airport and train stations in central Germany. One suspect was arrested following the shooting; it was not immediately reported if the police are still searching for additional suspects. Police issued a statement at approximately 18:00 on Wednesday lifting the security warning that was implemented in Halle earlier in the day, and the Halle train station reopened as of 18:00 on Wednesday. Heightened security has been reported at synagogues nationwide and in neighboring Czech Republic.

A heightened security presence is to be expected around transportation hubs and national borders. Transportation disruptions, including delays and traffic congestion, are to be expected in Halle.

Context

The attack comes on the holy Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
