Ongoing unrests reported in front of the UNHCR office in Cape Town October 30; avoid the area

Warning

Event

Clashes between police officers and refugees have been reported in front of the UN High Commissioner Office for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Cape Town as of Wednesday, October 30. Police forces reportedly used tear gas and batons to disperse about 300 refugees and asylum seekers who have been occupying the Waldorf Arcade Area since October 9. The occupation is to demand that the UNHCR relocates them to another country due to fears of xenophobic violence. There eviction follows a court order granted on October 18. At least 100 people were arrested.

Advice

Individuals in the area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, and seek alternative routes.
