Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to hold party congress in Braunschweig November 30-December 1; counterprotests planned November 29-30

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party is planning to hold a party congress in Braunschweig from Saturday, November 30, through Sunday, December 1. Around 600 delegates are expected to participate in the congress, which will be held in the Europaplatz’s Volkswagen Hall. Civil society and political organizations are organizing multiple counterprotests during the events. An anti-fascist rally will start at 20:00 (local time) on Friday, November 29, outside of the University of Fine Arts (HBK).
On Saturday, protesters will gather outside of the Volkswagen Hall from 07:00. At 10:00, demonstrators are planning to march from Hamburger Straße 36 at the Art and Culture Club to Europaplatz. Participants will then walk from Europaplatz to Schlossplatz at 11:00, via the city center. The largest rally is scheduled to start at 13:00 outside of the Braunschweig Palace.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all political events and protests. Clashes between rival political supporters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
