On Saturday, November 16, Iranian authorities have announced the death of a protester in Sirjan amid nationwide demonstrations that took place on Friday, November 15, to denounce the government's decision to reduce gas subsidies, leading to an increase in gas prices of up to 50 percent. The cause of the protester's death remains unclear.

Several people were also reportedly injured during the protests that broke out in several cities across the country on Friday,including in Machhad, Ahvaz, Chiraz, Bandar Abbas, Birjand, Gachsaran, Abadan, Khoramshahr, and Mahshahr. In Mashhad, activists abandoned their cars to block traffic and in Sirjan, protesters tried to set fire to an oil depot. Riot police used tear gas to disperse activists.

Nationwide internet disruptions were on the morning (local time) of Saturday. 

A heightened security presence is expected in all major cities across Iran, as well as continued nationwide internet disruptions. Further protests are possible in the coming days.
