Local media outlets have announced the death of three security officers near Tehran late night (local time) on Monday, November 18, amid nationwide protests. The reports indicate that the security officers were stabbed to death by protesters in an ambush.

Access to internet remains reportedly completely blocked by the Iranian government as of Tuesday, November 19. An Iran official said that "calm has been restored in the country" as of Tuesday morning. However, further demonstrations are possible across the country over the coming hours and days.

A heightened security presence, clashes between demonstrators and security forces, and internet disruptions are to be expected throughout Iran over the coming days. Disruptions to transportation and business are to be anticipated in areas affected by demonstrations.

Context

On November 14, the Iranian government announced a fuel price hike that sparked nationwide protests on November 15. Clashes between protesters and security forces have left at least 61 people dead as of November 18, as security forces have reportedly fired live ammunition, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse demonstrators. Authorities began limiting access to the internet on November 16. Security forces have arrested as many as 1000 people. Protests have been recorded in more than 50 Iranian cities.
