Mexico: 6.3-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Chiapas November 19

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) registered a 6.3-magnitude earthquake off the west coast of Chiapas state around 22:27 (local time) on Tuesday, November 19. According to the USGS the quake hit at a depth of 26 km (16 mi) about 115 km (71 mi) southwest of Puerto Madero. Officials did not immediately issue a tsunami warning.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
