Nine American Mormons killed near Chihuahua on November 4; heightened security presence reported

Media reports have indicated that nine members of an American Mormon community based in Mexico were killed in an ambush on Monday, November 4. The attack took place on the border between the Chihuahua and Sonora states in which two vehicles were torched by assailants. The members were on their way to Arizona state in the US.

Believed to be a case of mistaken identity, some experts have stated the attack was due to the ongoing drug war.

The federal agency Department of Security and Citizens' Protection stated additional security forces would be deployed to the area following the incident to assist in search and rescue operations for an estimated 11 missing members.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the coming several hours and days as search operations and an investigation are carried out. Associated transportation disruptions are also expected.
