South Africa: Heavy rain and flooding reported in several provinces November 11-15

Heavy rain and associated flooding which have hit the KwaZulu-Natal province since Monday, November 11, are forecast to persist until at least Friday, November 15. According to the South Africa Weather Service (SAWS), rain between 100 mm and 150 mm (4-6 in) are expected in some parts of the province, likely leading to landslides, traffic disruptions, and partial evacuation orders. On Monday, two people were killed in Durban due to the flooding. The adverse weather also prompted the closure of the M4 northern freeway between Umhlanga and Sibaya Verulam. Authorities stated that the motorway is likely to remain closed for weeks due to significant damage.

On Tuesday, November 12, SAWS added that severe thunderstorms could also result in localized flooding in the Gauteng, Free State, and North West provinces in the coming days, urging citizens to take precautionary measures.

Related disruptions, including transportation disruptions, infrastructure damages, and power outages, are possible in the coming days in affected areas.

Individuals the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
