Iran: Business disruptions due to poor weather conditions in Tehran and Khuzestan December 17

Poor weather and air quality cause business disruptions in Tehran and Khuzestan provinces on December 17; further disruptions possible in coming days

Warning

Event

The Iranian state news outlet announced that all universities in Tehran province - except in Damavand and Firoozkooh cities - and Khuzestan province will close on the morning (local time) of Tuesday, December 17, due to air pollution. The news agency also confirmed that all business will close in Ahvaz (Khuzestan) on Tuesday following heavy rain that caused numerous roads to flood. However, relief and emergency service centers will remain open.

Transportation and further business disruptions are anticipated in Tehran and Khuzestan provinces, and throughout Iran in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in Tehran and Khuzestan provinces, and in Iran more generally, should monitor weather reports, confirm road conditions before heading out, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
