Mauritius: Airport reopens as cyclone warning is revoked December 31 /update 3
MRU airport reopens as the cyclone warning is lifted on December 31; rain and associated disruptions expected in coming days
Event
On Tuesday, December 31, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) has reopened one day after the main island's only airport closed due to Cyclone Calvina on Monday, December 30. As of 10:00 (local time), the Mauritius Meteorological Service (MMS) announced that Calvina is moving away from the island nation and the risks of cyclonic conditions over the island have considerably decreased. The cyclone warning Class III has been waived at 10:10. Calvina is moving at 10 kph (6 mph) and is located at 21.6°S 58.2°E (map here)
Associated flooding, landslides, transportation and business disruptions are anticipated, as well as disruptions to power and communication services, in the coming hours and days.
Advice
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight status before setting out, contact your airline for more information, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
