At least 22 people were killed in a shootout in Villa Unión (Coahuila state) on Saturday, November 30. The incident occurred around midday (local time) when members of the Cartel del Noreste (CDN) opened fire on city hall. State security forces deployed to the scene and killed 16 of the gunmen in the ensuing shootout. Four police officers were also killed, along with two civilians. An unspecified number of civilians were taken hostage by the cartel members but have since been rescued.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the Villa Unión over the near term.
