Libya: GNA accepts ceasefire, including in Tripoli January 12

Event

The Government of National Accord (GNA) announced in the early hours (local time) on Sunday, January 12, that it has accepted the Libyan National Army's (LNA) ceasefire. The LNA declared a ceasefire on Saturday, January 11, to begin at 00:00 on Sunday, including in Tripoli, on the condition that the GNA abides fully to the ceasefire conditions.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Saturday that peace talks will be scheduled in Berlin, although she did not elaborate with further details.

It remains unclear as of Sunday as to how long the ceasefire will last. 

Context

The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
