Tripoli, Libya: Casualties Reported following LNA Shelling in Tripoli March 31
Shelling in Tripoli carried out by forces loyal to the Libyan National Army has killed one civilian and injured several others on March 31; additional attacks possible over the coming days
Event
According to international media sources, a rocket attack on Tuesday, March 31, suspected to have been carried out by Libyan National Army (LNA) forces, has killed one person and wounded several others in the capital Tripoli. The shelling reportedly targeted the densely populated area of Gergaresh, along with Abu Salim, Mazawgha, and Ain Zara areas outside of Tripoli. Some sources also suggest that shelling attacks targeted Awlad Dayab near Mitiga Airport (MJI) in Tripoli, causing material damage.
These reports come amid calls for a ceasefire in order to allow authorities to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Libya currently has eight confirmed cases of the virus.
Similar attacks are possible over the coming hours and days.
Context
The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
