Fiji: Warnings issued ahead of forecast severe weather in multiple regions April 29 /update 1

The Fijian National Disaster Management Office issued a severe weather alert on Wednesday, April 29, as heavy rain and flash floods is forecast for areas of southern Lau, southern Koro, and Kadavu. Authorities have also warned of possible evacuations in flood-prone areas. Additionally, the Fijian Meteorological Service announced that rain will continue over the eastern and interior areas of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Lau, Kadavu, Vatulele, Beqa, and the Lomaiviti island group. In anticipation of overland disruption, the Roads Authority has preemptively closed several areas in the Naitasiri district and the village of Naqali. Roads around Vunaniu and Namaqumaqua will only be accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles until further notice.

Authorities have advised people to take precautions against potential flash flooding and landslides in low lying areas and areas close to river banks, as isolated heavy rainfall is expected.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
