Libya: GNA airstrikes target munitions convoy in Bani Walid (Sof-Aljeen district) April 2

Event

Airstrikes carried out by Government of National Accord (GNA) forces in Bani Walid (Sof-Aljeen district) on Thursday, April 2, destroyed a munitions convoy transporting arms to forces loyal to the Libyan National Army (LNA). Airstrikes took place in the Tininay area and Nassma area of Bani Walid. One driver of a munitions truck was killed and another injured. On Thursday, airstrikes were also reported in Al-Wishkah, between Sirte and Misrata, resulting in six fatalities.

These reports come amid calls for a ceasefire in order to allow authorities to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Libya currently has ten confirmed cases of the virus.

Similar attacks are possible over the coming hours and days.

Context

The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
