Libya: GNA offensive against Tarhunah (Murqub district) closes coastal road April 18

Event

On Saturday, April 18, the Government of National Accord (GNA) launched an offensive from Msallata and Garabuli against pro-Libyan National Army (LNA) forces around Tarhunah (Murqub district). Fighting has been reported to the south of Garabuli, closing the coastal road.

Tarhunah has acted as a support base for the LNA offensive against Tripoli, further clashes between LNA and GNA over the control of the town is expected in the short term.

Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
