Libya: Government forces advance on LNA-controlled Tarhouna (Murqub district) April 18 /update 1

Event

Government of National Accord (GNA) forces launched a large-scale offensive on the Libyan National Army (LNA)- controlled Tarhunah (Murqub district) on Saturday, 18 April. Tarhouna is located about 65 km (45 miles) southeast of the capital Tripoli, and clashes were reported in the area of al-Hawatim, among other localities. Dozens of LNA fighters were reportedly captured in the offensive, and military equipment was also seized. A casualty figure has not yet been released. LNA officials claim that GNA forces had failed to enter Tarhouna and that the offensive had been repelled. Further clashes between LNA and GNA forces in and around Tarhouna are to be expected over the near term.

Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
